The voter turnout in the north for the presidential election this time marked a high percentage.

Although the turnout in the Jaffna District at the presidential election in 2010 was 25.66 per cent, this time it exceeded 61 per cent.

While the turnout this time in the Vanni District was 70 per cent, it was only 40.33 per cent at the 2010 presidential election.

In addition marked changes are also seen in the north according results at electoral level.

Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena polled more than 65 per cent votes in all electorates in the North except Kayts where results have been released.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who won Kayts in 2010 lost it this time.

While opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka won all the other electorates in the North in 2010, this time too opposition candidate Maitripala Sirisena won all of them.

However the significant difference this time is that the common candidate has been victorious in the north with a high lead when compared to the votes polled by the President.

This time too President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s opponent won the Mutur electorate in the Trincomalee District as in 2010.

However this time the common candidate has won the electorate with a higher lead.
