Former President looses the majority in Parliament

The UPFA has lost its majority in parliament as several of its MPs have decided to support new president Maithreepala Sirisena.

Accordingly, 112 MPs including the speaker are supporting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa while 112 MPs are supporting new president Maithreepala Sirisena.

MPs M.K.D.S. Gunawardana, Rajitha Senarathna, Duminda Dissanayake and Rajiv Wijesinghe pledged their support to then health minister Maithreepala Sirisena who quit the Rajapaksa government to become the opposition common candidate.

Later MPs Athuraliye Rathana Thera and Patali Champika Ranawaka of JHU pledged their support to then common candidate Maithreepala Sirisena.

Other MPs followed suits are MPs Wasantha Senanayake and Navin Dissanayake, Rishard Badi Udin, Ameer Ali, Hunaiz Farook, P. Rajathurai, P. Digambaram, V. Radha Krishnan, Achala Jagoda and Nandimitra Ekanayake.

As common candidate Maithreepala Sirisena won the election, MPs Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, Sarath Amunugama, Piyasena Gamage, S.B. Navinna, Reginald Corey, Vijith Vijithamuni Soyza, Jagath Pushpakumara, Nilvala Wijesinghe, Athauda Senevirathna and Manusha Nanayakkara pledged their support to the new president.

When President Maithreepala Sirisena assumed duties today, several other MPs Milroy Fernando, Abdul Cader, Dayasritha Tissera, Felix Perera, Lalith Dissanayake, Niyomal Perera, Arundika Fernando and another MP pledged their support to the new president.

By this afternoon, it is reported that another Matara district UPFA MP has decided to support President Maithreepala Sirisena.

Meanwhile Ceylon Workers Congress led by Arumugam Thondaman which has two parliament seats has pledged its support to President Maithreepala Sirisena.

In addition, 5 MPs including Wasudeva Nanayakkara, Tissa Vitharana and D.E.W. Gunasekera who represent the left wing have also pledged their support to President Maithreepala Sirisena.

According to the current circumstances, President Maithreepala Sirisena needs only one parliament seat to secure the majority in the current parliament.
