His Holiness the Pope arrived in Sri Lanka this morning invoking blessings to the entire populace.

The Pontiff was welcomed by President Maithreepala Sirisena and Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport.

The occasion was graced by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several parliamentarians.

Following the welcoming ceremony, His Holiness the Pope was ushered to a special platform where he received the guard of honour from the three forces.

Later, President Maithreepala Sirisena welcomed the Pontiff and addressed the gathering

Addressing the ceremony, His Holiness the Pope extended his wishes to the new President.

He also stated that the aim of his visit is to invoke blessings to the people of Sri Lanka and for peace and prosperity of the country.

His Holiness the Pope arrives in Sri Lanka on a three-day visit

The special aircraft carrying Pope Francis landed at Sri Lanka's Bandaranaike International Airport at 8:45 this morning.

President Maithripala Sirisena and Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith welcomed the Pope with state honors.

The Pope was accorded a tri-forces honor guard and a 21-gun salute while a Children Choir performed religious hymns welcoming the Pontiff.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, former Presidnet Chandrika Bandaranayaka, tri-forces commanders and religious leaders were also present at the occasion.

Sirisena stated that religious coexistence is a heritage of the Sri Lankans.

While addressing those gathered at the airport, His Holiness the Pope invoked blessings on the President to carry out his new responsibilities.

After an elaborate welcoming ceremony at the airport the Pope was escorted in a motorcade to Colombo along the Colombo-Negombo main road.

Thousands of people were gathered to greet the Pope and to obtain his blessings.

At one point His Holiness alighted from the vehicle and blessed the devotees.
