Uva Provincial Council Opposition Leader Harin Fernando was sworn in as the Council’s Chief Minister today before Provincial governor Nanda Mathew.
Chief Minister Harin Fernando said that he was informed by the governor to take oath as the chief minister after he proved majority power in the council.
The opposition of the Uva Provincial Council had 12 seats, and that number increased up to 18 as 6 UPFA members submitted affidavits declaring their consent to join the Opposition.
It is significant to mark the changing stance by UNP member Tissa Kutti Arachchi, who recently crossed over to the UPFA, and again changed his mind and return to UNP after the UPFA’s defeat.
Accordingly, the number of seats held by the UPFA has decreased to 14.
However the 2 JVP members would remain independent in the Uva Provincial Council. Pic By - Palitha Ariyawansha
