President Maithreepala Sirisena has advised not to allow any foreign company or foreigner to engage in gem mining, and to reject all pending requests.

According to the President’s Media Unit, the President has provided instructions to his officers regarding the matter while assuming duties as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment.

In addition, the President further advised them to ban sand mining in Polonnaruwa District and transporting sand from the 1st of February onwards.

He instructed them to provide a report within two weeks regarding the areas suitable and unsuitable for sand mining.
