The government has decided to provide an amnesty period for those who are keeping wild elephants illegally without licenses, to return the elephants.

Deputy Minister of tourism Wasantha Senanayaka stated that he already posses information regarding those who are keeping elephants illegally.

Environmentalists Pubudu Weeraratne says they have received reports of 80 elephants being held in captivity, illegally.
