The bar Association of Sri Lanka’s (BASL) Executive Council will today (26th) decide on further steps to be taken if Chief Justice Mohan Peiris continues to hold the post, its Secretary, Attorney-at-Law Ajith Pathirana  stated this.

Adding further, he stated that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka will take the decision during the convened discussion in this regard.

The BASL called upon the Chief Justice to submit his resignation in order to protect the honor and integrity of the judiciary.

Issuing a statement the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) alleged Peiris was present at Temple Trees from prior to dawn on January 9 along with some other key officials and former President Mahinda Rajapakse, at a time when there were discussions between such persons where former President Rajapakse allegedly attempted to remain in Office by a coup detat despite losing the popular vote.  

“It is reiterated and emphasized that, it is absolutely essential for the Chief Justice and members of the judiciary to remain strictly separate and uninvolved in political and executive decisions,” the statement stated that was issued following an emergency gathering of the Executive Council of the BASL.
