The voting rights and the ranks, medals and other privileges including the pension have been restored for former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka.

The Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said the decision to restore voting rights for General Fonseka was taken in compliance with the Presidential pardon given to General Sarath Fonseka by President Maithreepala Sirisena recently.

The Election Commissioner said that according to the provisions in the Constitution, General Fonseka would be able to enter his name to the voter registration list in the future.

At the same time, a senior officer attached to the Election Secretariat said that authorities are considering whether General Fonseka could be reinstated in his parliament seat if General Fonseka’s successor Jayantha Ketagoda resigns from parliament.

Meanwhile the Defence Ministry has returned his ranks, medals and other privileges including his pension which he had been stripped during the previous regime.
