Health and Indigenous Medicine Minister Rajitha Senaratne says that the draft for amending the National Authority Act on Tobacco and Alcohol will be presented in parliament today.

Participating at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday he said that although an attempt was made to present this draft act on several occasions during the previous regime, these attempts were proved futile.

Steps to include pictorial warning on cigarette wrappers were launched by current President Maitripala Sirisena when he was the Health Minister of the previous Government.

The WHO praised the steps the current President had taken against the promotion of cigarettes as well.

However while the Tobacco Company went to court against this step, the court decided that the pictorial warning on cigarette wrappers should cover only 60 per cent of the wrapper.

Meanwhile Higher Education State Minister Professor Rajiv Wijesinghe said that standing orders should be altered in a manner that would strengthen the parliament.

Responding to a query by our news team the Minister said that parliamentary standing orders are strong in many foreign countries.
