US Secretary of State John Kerry says that with the recent historic presidential election in which the people voted for a change, Sri Lanka has stepped into a new path.

Sri Lanka has focused itself on a path of greater accountability and responsibility aimed at safeguarding human rights, preserving democracy and eradicating corruption.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said so prior to beginning discussions with foreign affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the US State Department in  Washington.

On this occasion US Secretary of State John Keri also said that the US was keenly interested in the 100-day programme implemented on behalf of the people.

Similarly  the US Secretary of State said further that discussions would be held with the Foreign Affairs Minister about  President Maitripala Sirisena’s views on creating a new Sri Lanka that would bring about peace and prosperity for all sections of the people after the 30-year war.

On this occasion Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that while Sri Lanka was launching into a reawakening of democracy the aim of the constitutional amendments carried out through the 100-day programme was to strengthen democracy.

The new Sri Lanka aims at building a unity honouring ethnic, religious and cultural diversities.

Minister Mangala Samaraweera  also emphasised that while priority was given to the process of reconciliation,  unity and multiplicity was the policy of the new Government.

Sri Lanka aims at re-enlivening the strong relationship that existed for decades between Sri Lanka and the US.

A number of steps aimed at this objective  could be observed in the coming several months.

Action is being  taken for building a close friendship with the US.

Similarly Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samarweera said at the combined media briefing held prior to beginning the discussion with US Secretary of State John Keri that the US was considered not a threat but an opportunity for Sri Lanka.
