The residents of Galmuruwa in Madampe charge that police launched an assault on demonstrators this morning during a protest against sand mining in the area.

Later a 32-year old differently-abled person who was injured during the police assault was hospitalized, and he was transferred from Galmuruwa to Chilaw General Hospital for further treatment.

However hospital sources stated that the condition of the injured person is not critical.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the police demanding the release of four of their counterparts who were arrested by police during another protest in the morning.

The demonstrators charged although their four fellowmen were released on police bail, they had been assaulted while in police custody.

The Galmuruwa residents staged the demonstration again charging that their four protesters were assaulted during police custody.

When our news team contacted Police Media Spokesman office stated that it has not received details about this incident as yet.
