The Frontline Socialist Party Central working committee member Kumar Gunaratnam says that he needs a written assurance from the government to grant him the Sri Lankan citizenship in order to give up his Australian citizenship.
In a media statement issued today, Gunaratnam states that he has already requested from the subject minister John Amaratunga with regards to this matter.
Gunaratnam stated that he did not get a reply from the minister thus far.
He also asked why he is not given an opportunity to obtain Sri Lankan citizenship to engage in local politics.
He further stated that the Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, who is a close associate of the current government, was granted citizenship within a day.
Meanwhile, Frontline Socialist Party has staged a protest this afternoon in front of Fort Railway Station based on several demands including the assurance for Kumar Gunaratnam to engage in active politics in the country.
