The Special Presidential Investigation Unit operated under the direct supervision of the President has been dissolved.

The Senior Assistant Secretary to the President in charge of Establishment and Operation has sent a letter to the IGP informing about this decision.

The Special Presidential Investigation Unit was set up during former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s tenure in order to probe the corruption and irregularities committed by top government officials.

The letter to the IGP has stated this Unit was dissolved as all investigations carried out by the Unit have already been completed.

The letter has also informed the IGP to release all officials attached to this Unit and take special investigation reports into police custody.
