A task force has been appointed to implement the proposals of the Commission Report on the elimination of violence against women and female children.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated this while attending the National Women’s Day celebration held in Anuradhapura today.

Professor Savithri Gunasekara has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Task Force, while Doctor Selvi Thirichelwam has been appointed as the Executive Director.

This commission was established by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, while he was serving as the Opposition Leader.

The report of the commission was presented to the parliament by Minister of Women’s Affairs Chandrani Bandara on the 6th of this month.

While attending the national celebration, the Prime Minister reiterated that the responsibility of the task force is to implement the recommendations of the report within one year.

The Prime Minister stated that sufficient attention has not been given to violence committed against women in the country, and that relief measures are taken only after the offence has been committed.

He emphasized that legal and administrative action should be taken to prevent violence against women.

He added that Commission Report on elimination of violence against women and female children was presented to the parliament on the 6th of this month.

Speaking further regarding the matter, he stated that women will represent the state council established by the 19th amendment which is to be presented to the parliament in future.

In addition, measures will be taken to increase the women representation at local government institutes by 25%.
