Former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardana who was arrested by the CID today has been remanded till the 23rd of this month.
Police stated that CID arrested him after obtaining a long statement in connection with a financial fraud.
Later Sarana Gunawardana was remanded when he was produced before Attanagalla Magistrate.
The former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardana was charged for breaching an agreement to supply a stock of scrap iron worth Rs. 9.6 million from a BOI company.
The CID initiated investigations a few months ago, and accordingly police had obtained statements from Sarana Gunawardana on several previous occasions.
Meanwhile, the Bribery Commission obtained a long statement from MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena on the charges of collecting assets through illegitimate means.
A Bribery Commission spokesman told our news team that the questioning of the MP started at 9 am and continued for over 7 hours.
Previously, MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena was summoned to the Bribery commission on the 3rd of this month.
He was also summoned to the CID to record a statement on the 25th of February.
Last morning MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena was summoned once again to the Bribery Commission, however, he had informed that he was unable to attend due to an illness.
Meanwhile, police stated that a statement was recorded by the CID yesterday from the wife of Parliamentarian Sajin de Vass Gunawardena.
JVP has filed a complaint against him on drawing money through illegal means.

Sarana Gunawardane Arrested
United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Gampaha former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on charges of a financial fraud, the Police said. Mr. Gunawardane appeared at the CID office this morning on being summoned to record a statement from him.
