The UPFA requests the Minister in charge of Local Government to extend by another year the tenure of office of local government authorities that is due to end on 31st this year.

Issuing a communiqué, UPFA General Secretary former Minister Susil Premajayantha, said that the Election Department should be provided opportunity during this time to gazette demarcations and hold local government elections under the new system.

Recently law was amended to provide for introducing electoral divisions and a proportionate representative system and for abolishing the preferential voting system at the local government election.

UPFA General Secretary former Minister Susil Premajayantha, said in the communiqué, that while subsequently a Demarcation Commission had been appointed for demarcating Local Government Institution Divisions, a relevant report had been submitted to the Minister in charge of local government.

Accordingly the future local government election should be held according to a mixed system based on Divisions.

The tenure of office of 234 local government institutions ends on 31st March, 2015.

Therefore it will not be possible to hold the local government elections as soon as the tenure of office if these local government institution ends.

The UPFA General Secretary said that as a result of this, the local government institutions would come under the Local Government Authorities Commissioner’s administration.

Currently the administration in the majority of local government institutions lies with the UPFA.

The communiqué issued by the General Secretary says further that since many development activities launched during the previous regime are nearing completion by now, the contribution for local government councilors is also essential.
