Terms of 234 local government institutes extended until 15th of May
The official term of 234 local government institutes which was due to terminate by the 31st of March has been extended until the 15th of May.
Previously it was noted that following the termination of their terms, the administration of these local government institutes were to be handed over to the respective local government commissioners, while the polling of these institutes would be held under the mixed electoral system.
However, the UPFA requested in writing from the Minister of Local government and Provincial councils to extend their term, which terminates on the 31st of March, by one year.
Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya stated that his duties do not include changing the electoral system or deciding the number of parliamentary seats.
He stated this while addressing a ceremony held at University of Peradeniya today, and added that this should be implemented by the parliament.
Expressing his views further, the Election Commissioner stated that his department is similar to the fire brigade.
