Court Order to Arrest Basil
The Kaduwela Magistrate Dhammika Hemapala ordered today to arrest former Economic Development minister Basil Rajapaksa, soon after his arrival in the country, and produce him before court.
Former Economic Development Minister Rajapaksa is charged for alleged misappropriation of several million rupees of state money during his ministerial tenure.
A lawyer appearing on behalf of the former minister filed a motion today, and appealed the court to declare null and void the previous court order to arrest his client on his arrival in the country.
The motion has pleaded the court to allow former minister Rajapaksa to appear before the court through his lawyers.
Having considered the motion, the Magistrate rejected it.
Later the Magistrate ordered police to follow the original court order, arrest the former minister on his arrival and produce him before the court.
Our correspondent stated that 20 lawyers led by senior lawyer U.R. de Silva appeared for former minister Basil Rajapaksa.
The Police Financial Crime Division filed the case against former economic development minister Bail Rajapaksa for allegedly misappropriating a large amount of state money.
They included bonuses of the Divi Neguma Department, Spending Divi Neguma Department funds for campaign activities in the last Presidential election and spending about 70 million rupees to hold a conference.
Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera told recently in a media conference that the Police Financial Crime Division has sought court assistance to bring down former minister Basil Rajapaksa to record a statement.
Accordingly, the Kaduwela Magistrate ordered policelast Friday to record a statement from minister Rajapaksa.
Meanwhile former minister Basil Rajapaksa stated in a communiqué that he would return to the country soon.
He has also stated in his communiqué that he went to the US to obtain medical treatment.
