UN says important changes are taking place in Sri Lanka

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Director - Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations Development Haoliang Xu arrived in the island yesterday.

Xu had said that his second visit to the country comes at a time when there are many important changes taking place.

He had said that he was in Sri Lanka to learn more about emerging development needs and expectations, in this new environment, with the new government in office.

Speaking further UN Assistant Secretary-General also noted that he sees this as a significant opportunity to ascertain the future direction of UN’s support, and in particular, to strengthening UNDP’s role as a key development partner in Sri Lanka.

During his visit, Xu is expected to meet and exchange views with high-level Government officials, development partners and the civil society and visit North Central and Northern provinces.
