Attempt to bring back Sri Lankans trapped in Yemen unsuccessful
The Foreign Affairs Ministry states that the attempt to bring back Sri Lankans trapped in Yemen by air was futile.
As it was informed before, 50 Sri Lankans in Yemen were to be airlifted via a Chinese craft to Bahrain today.
However, due to the volatile security state of Yemen the aircraft could not fly to Yemen today.
Nevertheless, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith P. Perera told our news team that his aim is to bring the Sri Lankans by air or sea to a closer country as soon as possible.
India, China as well as Indonesia have extended their support to bring back the stranded Sri Lankans in Yemen.
It is also considered that this is the first time China is involved in rescuing foreigners during an international crisis.
Pakistan, Ethiopia, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Britain as well as Canada have requested China’s aid to repatriate their citizens trapped in Yemen.
Expressing further regarding the matter, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith P. Perera stated that he’s continuously keeping in touch with Sri Lankans in Yemen through their embassy.
