The resolution moved by the Government seeking the approval of Parliament to issue Treasury Bills not exceeding 400 billion rupees in addition was defeated by 21 votes.

31 members voted in favour of the Government while 52 members voted against.

Independent MP Ajith Kumara asked for a division after the winding up speech made by Policy Planning and Economic Development Deputy Minister.

However after the defeat of this motion, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayke held a media briefing at the finance ministry last night.

On this occasion the Finance Minister said that defeating this motion was an act of injustice to the working community.

The Minister said further that even though the proposal the Government had presented had not been passed in parliament steps would be taken to provide the relief required for the people.
