CBK hooted & jeered at Kurunegala [VIDEO]

A tense situation erupted at the final stage of the SLFP Kurunegala District Convention which was held today at the Maliyadeva Girls School in Kurunegala.

The agitation occurred when a group of participants staged a protest against the presence of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the meeting.

Several elected members including Kurunegala District MPs Jayarathna Herath, Salinda Dissanayake, T.B. Ekanayake, S.B. Navinna, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Johnston Fernando, Shantha Bandara, Nilvala Wijesinghe, Neranjan Wickramasinghe and Tharanath Basnayake and North Western Provincial Council Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera were present at the meeting today.

The protest was staged when former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was invited to participate in the lighting of the traditional oil lamp.

Despite the protest, the ceremony continued.

However, a group of participants started the protest again, against former President Chandrika Kumaratunga as she was about to leave the premises.

The protesters accused former President Kumaratunga for making allegations against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

At that moment, MP Jayarathna Herath intervened to calm the situation.

Our correspondent stated that several Pradeshiya Sabha members were assaulted during the commotion.

Later, Chairman of SLFP Youth Front and Deputy Minister Shantha Bandara stated that a group of outsiders belonging to another political party attempted to create an unpleasant situation.
