TNA MP Sambandan request the post of opposition leader
A letter was handed over to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa requesting him to give the opposition leader position to Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi.
This request has been made by Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi parliament group leader R. Sampandan.
Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi General Secretary Thurai Rajasingham and R. Sampandan have signed in their request letter to the Speaker.
The Opposition leader position is currently disputed after a group of SLFP MPs accepted ministerial positions in the government.
Several heated arguments were raised in parliament with regards to this issue, and later, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa stated that he would settle the matter.
However the situation turned worse after 54 UPFA MPs gave their consent in writing to the Speaker asking him to appoint MP Dinesh Gunawardana as the Opposition Leader.
Finally, the Speaker asked UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha to select a suitable MP to the Opposition leader position.
