Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe states that the late Maha Nayaka Thera of the Asgiri Chapter Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddha-Rakkitha Thera rendered a tremendous service to disseminate Dhamma nationally and globally.

Prime Minister stated this while paying last respects to the late Chief Prelate this morning at the Kandy Asgiri Temple’s Upali Memorial Hall where the remains of the late Chief Prelate is placed.

Large number of devotees gathered in Kandy to pay their last respects to the late Chief Prelate of Asgiri Chapter.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Bhutan who is currently touring the island also joined to pay his last respects today.

The Cremation of the late Chief Prelate will be held tomorrow evening at Kandy Police grounds.

The funeral procession carrying the remains of the late Thera will proceed from Asgiri temple to the police grounds at 1pm tomorrow.

The funeral will be conducted with full state honors where a 17 gun salute is due to be accorded to the late Thera.

More than 1000 troops of the tri-forces will also attend the state funeral.

According to a communiqué released by the government, prior to the cremation of the remains of the late Chief Prelate, a floral tribute will be conducted from air followed by the 17 gun salute.
