The cremation of the late Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera was held with full state honors today in Kandy.

The Most Venerable Mahanayake was accorded a state funeral at the Asgiriya Police grounds, Kandy at 2.00 p.m. today.

The revered Buddhist monk, passed away on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for the past month.

His remains were flown to Colombo last Thursday and later taken to the Asgiriya Maha Vihara.

Thousands of people flocked to the temple to pay respects to the late Thero.

The government declared April 12th as a Day of Mourning to honor the late Chief Prelate.

President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasingha, Opposition Leader Nimal Siri Pala De Silva, many MP’s and Ministers as well as former President Mahinda Rajapakse were present to pay their last respects.

The funeral of the Most Venerable Aggamaha Panditha Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter will be held today (12).

The cremation with full State honours together with 17 gun salutes held at the Asgiriya Police Grounds in Kandy at 2 pm.

The Government has also declared 12 April, a Day of National Mourning as a mark of respect.

Accordingly, all private and state institution are requested to fly the national flag at half-mast on the aforementioned date and to hoist yellow flags in Temples and houses.
