Dhaka Central Jail authorities have confirmed the hanging of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman late on Saturday night for war crimes committed during the 1971 war. His hanging is expected to result in angry reactions from his supporters who have called for a general strike.

Kamaruzzaman, 63, was hanged by trained convicts inside the Dhaka Central Jail after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal against a death sentence imposed by a special tribunal for genocide and torture of civilians during the conflict.

Before his death, he said that only god was the one who could decide how long a person should live or die while on earth and refused to seek a presidential pardon.

After his hanging, Kamaruzzaman's body was draped in a white cloth and escorted under heavy security by a van to his home village for burial. His grave, according to reports, had already been prepared in anticipation.

The Gana Jagaron Moncha, a youth movement, has welcomed the hanging, and demanded that other war criminals should also be hanged without delay.

The acting head of Jamaat-e-Islami, Maqbul Ahmed, said in a statement: "The government, in a much planned way, killed him (Kamaruzzaman) in political revenge."

The party has declared Sunday as a "prayer day" for Kamaruzzaman and peace and called for a general strike on Monday.

The Border Guard Bangladesh paramilitary force has been deployed across the country to put down possible protests.
