All-party discussion on Electoral Reforms
The Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said that he is ready for all party discussion to pass the 20th Amendment in order to change the electoral system.
Speaking to our news team over the 20th Amendment Bill being drafted by the SLFP, the Opposition leader expressed these views.
The SLFP recently appointed a 4-member Committee under the patronage of former minister G.L. Peries to propose necessary changes to the electoral system.
A Committee member MP Susil Premajayantha said the committee which sat recently decided to prepare the new Draft Bill on the basis of the recommendations of Dinesh Gunawardana report.
The Dinesh Gunawardana Committee was appointed in 2002 to make recommendations in order to change the current electoral system.
The committee issued even an interim report, recommending a mixed electoral system.
However UNP says that no party has agreed to the Dinesh Gunawardana committee report.
