The woman who jumped in front of a moving train with her little daughter at Pilimathalawa Railway station has been identified as a resident of Hanthanawatta West in Kandy.

The woman carried her 4-months old daughter to jump before the moving Podi Menike train and committed suicide at 8.45 this morning.

Police said the little girl who received severe injuries in the accident died en route, while she was rushed to Peradeniya hospital.

Investigations revealed that the victim had taken medicine for a mental illness since a long time.

Mother jumps to a running train & commits suicide with 1 ½ year old child

A woman carrying her infant son committed suicide this morning by jumping in front of a speeding train in the Pilimathalawa area.

The incident had occurred at around 8.45am today when the woman jumped in front of a train traveling from Colombo to Kandy.

Police said the mother is around 35 years old while the child is about one and half year old.

Police are yet to identify the deceased while the remains have been currently placed at the Kandy Base Hospital.
