PM's statement on Indian fishermen has been misunderstood – Ex-President
Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga says that certain Indians have misunderstood the recent statement made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe proposing to shoot at Tamil Nadu poachers if they encroach into Sri Lankan marine waters.
On the sidelines of a conference in Dubai, Former President Kumaratunga told an Indian newspaper that when media persons kept harassing the Premier with questions, he responded.
He just said that, if an unwanted person came into another person’s house illegally, the owner had a right to shoot him for trespassing.
However those who misunderstood the statement as an order to Sri Lankan Navy to shoot Tamil Nadu encroachers, staged protests in Tamil Nadu.
Speaking further on the fishing issue, the former president said that the illegal methods whatsoever used by Tamil Nadu fishermen cannot be approved.
She pointed out that certain illegal methods such explosion of dynamites could extinct the aquatic resources in the Northern sea.
Former President Kumaratunga emphasized such hazardous methods would pose a grave threat to the livelihood of the fishermen in the North.
