The debate on the 19th constitutional amendment will take place in parliament tomorrow. The vote taking regarding the amendment will take place on the evening of the 28th.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Media Unit stated that the draft bill of the 19th amendment was handed over to the Chief Prelate of Malwathu Chapter Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera and the Anu Nayaka Thera of Asgiri Chapter Most Venerable Galagama Sri Attadassi Thera by the President who also received their blessings.
Later the President paid a courtesy call to the Chief incumbent of Gatambe Rajopavanaramaya, Venerable Keppetiyagoda Siri Wimala Thera and handed over the amendment draft bill to him.
Meanwhile, a demonstration was staged in the middle of Kandy town today, demanding to support the passing of the 19th amendment.
According to our correspondent, Purawasi Ekamuthuwa Organization staged the demonstration, while several groups of university students and other student organizations joined the demonstration.
The demonstrators emphasized that all public representatives should support the passing of the 19th constitutional amendment.
Releasing a communiqué, the alternative group of Mahajana Eksath Peramuna stated that they have set special focus on the mass media control included in the 19th amendment, and stated that it should not include any clause which will hinder the freedom of mass media.
