A special investigation was launched by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into an incident where a man said to be a security officer (Army Corporal) of Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa was caught bearing a gun in the vicinity of President Maithripala Sirisena at the SLFP Hambantota district meeting held on Saturday (25).
The gun holder has been identified as a Corporal in the Sri Lankan Army and when grilled he has stated that he was serving as a security officer to Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa as well.
However, President's Security Division (PSD) personnel had neglected the man in the security check and later was identified by them that he had not undergone the proper security check.
When they checked him, the PSD officers had found a gun in his possession and he was removed from the premises right away.
It is reported that they have not verified as yet the connection between the gun holder and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and the CID is yet to investigate the incident further.
