'Sathyagraha' by Sobitha Thera called off
The Leader of the Movement for a Just Society Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera said that he called off the Sathyagraha as the President assured him the 19th Amendment could be passed without any hindrance.
A march was organized by Puravasi Balaya in support of the 19th Amendment at the Parliament Roundabout today and Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera also participated in the foot march.
Co Convener of Puravasi Balaya Saman Rathnapriya expressed his views during the march.
The President of the Movement for Just Society Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera said yesterday that he would launch a continuous Sathyagraha at the Independence Square from this morning until the 19th Amendment is passed.
However, the Thera joined the Puravasi Balaya demonstrators at parliament roundabout until 12 noon.
Later, the Thera said that he called off the Sathyagraha after the president gave him an assurance to pass the 19th Amendment.
Meanwhile, the Socialist People’s Front has decided to support pass the 19th Amendment.
The Socialist People’s Front which consists of 5 left winged parties, including Lanka Samasamaja Party, Sri Lanka Communist Party and Democratic Left Front, has convened a media conference to announce their decision this morning.
