The vote for the 19th amendment to the constitution will be held this afternoon.

The 2nd reading of the 19th amendment was held yesterday in Parliament.

Six proposals out of 8 put forward by the Opposition to vote for the 19th amendment agreed. Meanwhile the committee comprising government and opposition members have agreed to look in to 6 proposals out of 8 put forward by the opposition regarding the 19th amendment to the constitution.

Deputy Minister Ajith P Perera who represents the committee stated that the opposition did not agree to the appointment of 5 members to the constitutional council and to the proposal where the President must consult the Prime Minister when appointing the cabinet.

The Opposition states that Parliamentarians should be appointed to the constitutional council and the President must take decisions regarding the cabinet.

There was uncertainty again over the passing of the 19th Amendment, as the opposition demanded the government to implement 8 of their proposals in reciprocal to their support.

Two political party leaders’ meetings were held yesterday while the parliament was debating the 19th Amendment.

President and the prime minister participated in the party meeting held in the afternoon.

However, Deputy Minister Ajith P Perera stated that another party leaders meeting will be held at 10 this morning.
