The government and the Opposition have engaged in a dire attempt to pass the 19th Constitutional Amendment.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella also confirmed this to our news team this morning.

There was uncertainty yesterday about passing the 19th Amendment as the Opposition demanded 8 new proposals be included in the new Draft Bill.

However, Deputy Foreign Minister Ajith P Perera, who also represented the Committee, appointed later to study the new 8 demands, told our news team that the Committee agreed to 6 proposals out of the 8.

The Opposition has objected the Clause of the new Amendment which cited that the President should consult the Prime Minister in appointing the Cabinet, and about the appointment of members to the Constitutional Council.

The changes, proposed by the Opposition are, that parliamentarians should be appointed to the Constitutional Council, and the President should take decisions about the Cabinet.

However, leader of the house Lakshman Kiriella expressed his views about the criterion of appointing members to the Constitutional Council.

Meanwhile, the vote taking on the 19th Constitutional Amendment is scheduled to be held this evening.

A senior parliamentary official told our news team that the vote taking is scheduled to begin at 6 in the evening.
