The arrested Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando was remanded till tomorrow.

The Colombo Special Investigation Unit arrested Fernando for allegedly assaulting and abducting a person from the custody of Ambalantota police last year.

Having remanded the suspect till tomorrow, Hambantota Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara ordered the Director of the Colombo Special Investigation Unit to appear before Court as the police statements to the court found to be contradictory.

Meanwhile, several other charges have also been made against Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando.

One of the charges is his attempt to assault a group of visiting parliamentarians to the Mattala International Airport and the Magam Pura Port last year.

Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando’s notoriety became the talk of the town as he chased after the group of visiting UNP MPs brandishing a pistol.

However, Eraj Fernando told our news team later that he wielded only a toy pistol.

Hambantota mayor remanded

Hambantota mayor Eraj Fernando who was arrested today has been remanded till tomorrow. 

Police have arrested Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando for allegedly attempting to assault a suspect in police custody.

Police media spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that this incident occurred in March 2014.
