Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has become the first Japanese leader to address a joint session of the US congress yesterday, where he expressed his "eternal condolences" for the American lives lost fighting Japan in the Second World War, and declared Tokyo's emergence as a global security player in the face of China's rising power.

While his grandfather addressed a single chamber of Congress back in 1957, Abe has made history, speaking to a prestigious joint session.

The Japanese Prime Minister addressed Congress from the very same spot where President Roosevelt asked for a declaration of war against Japan in 1941.

Before delivering his speech, Abe paused to lay a wreath at Washington’s World War 2 memorial - a testament to reconciliation.
