2 University Students arrested for assaulting police and vandalizing state property during Colombo Bhikku protest
2 students were arrested for assaulting the police officers and vandalizing state property during the demonstration staged in front of the University Grants Commission in Ward Place, Colombo yesterday.
The inter-university Bhikku Federation staged a protest in front of the UGC yesterday, accusing that the university placements for student monks have been curtailed
A tense situation occurred between the police and the student monks, as well as university students when the students tried to enter the UGC premises.
However, Police stated that some of the student monks and university students were able to enter the premises.
During the clash which ensued between the students and the police, the OIC of Cinnamon Gardens Police and the Sub Inspector of Dematagoda Police received injuries, when a student monk hurled a stone at them.
They were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
Meanwhile, the 5 student monks who received injuries during the clash are currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.
According to the Police media spokesman, the 2 arrested students were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court today and were remanded until the 11th of May.
Meanwhile, the inter-university students’ federation also convened a media briefing today, where the convenor of the federation Najith Indika strongly condemned the act of assaulting the student monks.
