Update : Major May day rallies begin; UPFA May Day supporters also join Kirulapona rally
17 rallies together with 12 parades were held in Colombo this afternoon to mark the May Day today.
The UPFA rally was held with the patronage of President Maithreepala Sirisena at Hyde Park.
UPFA supporters paraded from near Maradana Gamini Hall and Lotus Pond Theatre to reach the Hyde Park. Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga also participated in the UPFA May Day rally. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa did not attend the UPFA rally today.
However, he has sent a message which was read out by UPFA General Secretary MP Susil Premajayantha.
During the rally, 4 resolutions were passed, including a vote of condolence for the thousands of dead in the recent massive earthquake in Nepal.
Another vote of thank for assisting in passing the 19th Constitutional Amendment was also proposed by Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Meanwhile, the UNP May Day rally under the theme of “A country full of united people” was held with the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Borella Campbell Park.
The UNP May Day parade started from Maradana P.D. Sirisena Sports grounds at 1.30 this afternoon. Large crowds were participating in the UNP May Day rally, and 6 resolutions were passed during the rally. They were proposed by Transport Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara.
At the same time, JVP started its May Day parade at the S. de S. Jayasinghe sports ground to reach to BRC grounds at Thimbirigasyaya.
The May Day rally jointly organized by Opposition political parties and trade unions is held at Lalith Athulathmudali grounds in Kirullapone. Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, National Freedom Front, Sri Lanka Mahajana party, Lanka Samasamaja Party, Desha Vimukthi party and Communist party of Sri Lanka are participating in the Kirullapone rally.
It was significant that SLFP MPs including Kumara Welgama, Ranjith Soyza, Gamini Lokuge, Salinda Dissanayake, Prabha Ganeshan as well as Western Provincial Council Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga joining the May Day rally organized at the Hyde Park.
The May Day rally of the Frontline Socialist party was held at Bandaranayake Grounds in Rajagiriya.
The Democratic Party’s May Day procession which commenced from Ward Place in Colombo proceeded to Shalika grounds in Narahenpita where they held the May day rally.
The May Day rally of the Nawa Sama Samaja party was held at Price Grounds in Pettah, after they began the May Day procession from Gunasinghepura.
Eksath Samajavadi party’s May Day rally was held at Kosgaha Junction in Grandpass while the May Day rally of the national and regional journalists’ Collective was held at Sawsiripaya in Colombo 7.
Meanwhile, the Ceylon Workers’ Congress May Day rally was held under the patronage of the party’s General Secretary former Minister Arumugam Thondaman in Thalawakele, while the TNA held their May Day rally in Trincomalee.
Police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that 2800 Police officers were deployed for the security in Colombo town, while 2250 police officers were deployed to control traffic.

All ready for May Day rallies and processions
The main political parties have already made all arrangements to hold their May Day rallies and parades.
Our staff correspondents state that the JVP is ready to start its May Day parade at the S. De S. Jayasinghe Sports ground soon.
The JVP May Day rally is scheduled to be start at 3 PM at the BRC ground in Thimbirigasyaya.
The UPFA May Day Rally led by SLFP is held this year at the Hyde Park grounds.
Their parade is to start from Maradana Gamini Hall and Lotus Pond Theatre at 1PM.
Meanwhile, the UNP has organized its May Day rally with the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Borella Campbell Park.
The Leftist parties and trade unions have made preparations to hold their May Day rally at Kirulapona grounds, under the theme ‘Joint May Rally of the Working People’.
Parties including Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, National Freedom Front, Sri Lanka Mahajana Party, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Desha Vimukthi Party and Sri Lankan Communist Party will hold the joint May Day rally.
The Deputy General Manager of the SLTB Raja Gunathilake stated that they have deployed 1221 buses for today’s May Day rallies.
He stated that these buses were deployed to all political parties based on advance payments.
Accordingly, UNP has reserved 679 buses, SLFP has reserved 252 buses and the JVP has reserved 229 buses.
In addition, other parties and trade unions have also reserved 61 buses from the SLTB.

The UNP’s May Day rally will be held under the theme “A country of united people” at the Campbell Grounds in Borella under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha stated that the SLFP May Day Rally will be held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the Hyde Park Grounds.
Meanwhile, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka stated that the JVP May Day Rally will be held at the BRC grounds.
