Probe into sale of Pork & liquor during Vesak

Two persons have been arrested for transporting 144 bottles of liquor without license, to be sold at a higher price on the Vesak Poya day.

The suspects were arrested in Udugama, Galle this morning following a tip off received by the police.

Police have also seized the three wheeler used for transporting the illegal liquor.

Police further stated that the suspects are residents of Udugama area.

Meanwhile, several bottles of liquor without license worth over Rs. 1 million were discovered at a seaside tourist hotel in Wadduwa area.

The illegal liquor was discovered during a raid conducted by the Excise Department last night.

The department also stated that 2 suspects were also arrested during the raid.

Vennappuwa Police have arrested a person along with 100kg of Pork to be sold on Vesak Poya day.

According to the police media spokesman’s office, the raid was conducted following a tip off received by the police.

The suspect was engaged in selling the stock of pork at the time.

The arrested 38 year old suspect is a resident of Boralessa, Lunuwila.

The week from 30th of April to 6th of May was declared as the national Vesak Week.

Accordingly, the communiqué released by the government ordered the liquor shops, meat shops, Betting centres, casinos as well as night clubs to be closed today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Excise Department stated that they will conduct special raids to find persons who sell liquor during these two days.
