Strong winds experienced in Polonnaruwa and Vavuniya
The Meteorology Department states that cyclone condition similar to Tornado could hit any part of the island due to inter monsoon weather pattern.
Meteorologist on duty Pabodini Karunapala told our news team that such windy conditions could be experienced with rain in the evening or in the night.
Meanwhile, strong winds were experienced in Polonnaruwa and Vavuniya districts last night, damaging 27 houses in the Polonnaruwa district and 92 houses in the Vavuniya district.
Meteorologist on duty Pabodini Karunapala stated that a tornado condition may occur due to strong winds, which may last 15 to 20 minutes. She also stated that lightning and thunder showers will be experienced in many parts of the island in the evening and night.
Meanwhile, when our news team enquired her regarding the extremely high temperature experienced during these days, she added that people may feel uncomfortable due to low wind speed which doesn’t allow sweat to evaporate.
She also stated that the situation could aggravate under inter tropical convergence zone currently experienced in the island.
Once the inter monsoon season ends, the north western monsoon season will begin mid May, where wind speed will increase with showers.
She concluded that during this time the extreme heat felt during these days will be relieved.
