A consensus has been reached that SLFP MPs would not participate in rallies held demanding that Mahinda Rajapaksa be made the UPFA prime ministerial candidate.

Agreement has been expressed at the discussion held between President Maitripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa that this should be implemented according to a decision the party central committee had taken.

A senior SLFP minister who participated in the discussion said the former president’s faction too had given the nod to this proposal put forward by President Maitripala Sirisena’s faction.

Another meeting demanding that former president Mahinda Rajapaksa should be nominated as the prime ministerial candidate is scheduled to be held in Kurunegala yesterday.

Several political parties constituting the UPFA have organized this rally.

The Minister said further that at the SLFP Central Committee meeting a decision had been taken recently that SLFP MPs should not participate in those meetings.

However some MPs had ignored this decision and had on different occasions taken part in these meetings.

The senior Minister said further that with the President Maitripala Sirisena faction pointing out that this was a problem for party unity and discipline, the nod was given for SLFP MPs for not participating in such meetings in the future.
