Local bodies terms lapse will be placed under special commissioners
President Maitripala Sirisena said that special commissioners would be appointed for the 234 Divisional Councils which end their period of office on 15th this month.
Participating at meeting held in Aluthgama yesterday the President said that the election of these local government authorities would be held this year.
Meanwhile local government councillors’ collective said that on 15th instant black flags would be hoisted in all local government authorities wielding UPFA rule.
This came to light at a conference a group of UPFA local government councilors held in Colombo yesterday against dissolving the local government authorities and bringing them under a rule of officials.
At this conference they passed eight resolutions.
Among these are several other resolutions including briefing the President and the Prime Minister about the dissolution of local government authorities and a one-year extension of local government authorities’ period of office.
However, President Maithripala Sirisena addressing a meeting in Aluthgama stated that Divisional councils will not be dissolved.
