Student monks stage a protest in Colombo Fort

Thursday, 14 May 2015 - 19:16

The Inter University Bhikku Federation staged a continuous Satyagraha this afternoon in front of the Fort Railway Station, stating that the intake of student monks to state universities has been curtailed.

Having staged a protest this afternoon, the Bhikku students set up a makeshift hut in front of the Fort Railway Station and commenced the Satyagraha.

Convener of the federation Venerable Thanne Gnanananda Thera told our news team that even after 50 days, the authorities have failed to solve this problem.

Student monks of Sri Jayawardenapura, Ruhuna, Kelaniya and Sabaragamuwa universities participated in the Satyagraha.

The Inter University Bhikku Federation staged a protest in front of the University Grants Commission on the 29th of April over the same demand.

5 student monks and 2 police officers were injured in a clash which erupted between police and the student monks during this protest.
