Period of office of 234 local government bodies ends today: Administration under special commissioners
The tenure of office of 234 local government bodies in the island ends today.
While their period of office will not be extended, they will be brought under special commissioners.
The purpose of this is to provide the opportunity for having councilors elected to local government bodies in the future after holding the local government election under a new election system.
The Public Administration and Local Government Minister has informed the cabinet that due to this the tenure of office of these local government bodies would thus be allowed to end.
It is mentioned in the relevant cabinet paper that while the tenure of office of another 65 local government bodies will end on July 31, the tenure of office of 21 local government bodies will end on October 16 and that of the two local government bodies will end on October 31.
