After the term of office of 234 local government bodies expired midnight Friday, black flags were hoisted in several local government bodies today in protest to the government’s decision to place them under the purview of a commissioner.

The protestors stated that it was not fair to place the local government bodies under the purview of a commissioner, without extending the term of office of these institutes until they hold an election.

3 municipal councils, 30 urban councils and 201 Pradeshiya sabhas comprising the 234 local government bodies ended their term of office Midnight Friday.

Accordingly, these institutes will be placed under the purview of the Secretaries of the respective Pradeshiya Sabhas and urban councils as well as the Commissioners of the municipal councils.

However, State Minister Dilan Perera has stated yesterday that they intend to take measures with regard to this matter.
