Another suspect was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of Kytes female student
Another suspect was arrested today at Wellawatta in connection with the gang rape and murder of a 17-year old female student of Punkuduthivu Maha Vidyalaya in Kytes.
Police Media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that 9 suspects have already been arrested in connection with the gang rape and murder of the Kytes student.
The girl had been abducted on her way to school, gang raped and strangled to death on the 13th of May.
Later police found her body with her arms and legs bound, from a shrub jungle in the neighborhood.
Two suspects were first arrested, and another five were arrested eventually. Angry villagers attempted to assault the suspects while they were taken to Kytes Police. Two policemen were also injured during the commotion. Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that police later used a Navy boat to transport the suspects to Jaffna Police.
Our correspondent stated that Kytes residents attempted to assault the lawyer who appeared for the suspect arrested at Wellawatta. The residents charged that the lawyer had made arrangement to send the 9th suspect abroad to save him from legal action.
Several shops in Jaffna town were closed today in protest of the gang rape and murder of the student. Students of several schools staged demonstrations in front of their schools in Jaffna as well.
Meanwhile, a youth staged a fast unto death campaign, complaining the resettlement program is delaying at Sampur in Muttur. The 29-year old youth is staying at a displaced camp at Kiliweddi in Muttur.
