Update: Parliament adjourns until tomorrow after commotion repeated by the Opposition

Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkodi decided to adjourn the parliament until 1pm tomorrow, after it was briefly adjourned twice due to the objections raised by the opposition MPs.

The decision was taken after a tense situation occurred when the opposition MPs requested to take the debate regarding the no confidence motion presented against Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran within the course of the day.

Parliament adjourned till 1PM tomorrow

Parliament was adjourned till 1 PM tomorrow by Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkodi, since the tense situation which occurred regarding the no confidence motion presented against Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran could not be resolved.

The parliament was adjourned after announcing the decision taken by the Speaker during the party leaders’ meeting.

Leader of Mahaja Eksath Peramuna MP Dinesh Gunawardena who expressed his views regarding the no confidence motion, stated that a one day debate should be held in parliament.

Leader of the House Minister Lakshman Kiriella stated that they have reached an agreement during the party leaders meeting which was held under the patronage of the Speaker.

Deputy Speaker Chandima Weekkodi adjourned the parliament for 10 minutes when the MPs of the opposition voiced their objection regarding the matter.

After the parliament recommenced, Leaderof NFF Wimal Weerawansa stated that the debate should be held within the course of the day.

This statement instigated another tense situation in parliament, and the Deputy Speaker took measures to adjourn parliament for 15 minutes.

Later when the parliament recommenced, quoting the Speaker he stated that the more time was required to study the no confidence motion in detail to offer a solution.

Once again the opposition MPs voiced their objection regarding the matter, while Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella requested the Deputy Speaker to adjourn the parliament until tomorrow.

Accordingly, the Deputy Speaker took measures to adjourn parliament till 1pm tomorrow.
