A tense situation occurred during the protest staged by a group of residents demanding to remove the Meethotamulla garbage dump in Wellampitiya this evening.
According to our correspondent, the protestors obstructed the Colombo – Awissawella main road and even burnt tires during the protest.
The traffic along this road was interrupted due to the protest.
However, the protestors became violent when the police arrived at the site.

Expressing his views regarding the incident, Police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara told our news team that the police was compelled to use minimum force to disperse the unruly crowd when they began to act in a violent manner by burning tires and obstructing Colombo – Awissawella main road.
He added that few isolated groups still remain at the site, and if they too begin to act in a violent manner, the police will use minimum force to disperse the crowd.
