The health strike that continued for 2 days came to an end today at 6.30 am.

Health Workers belonging to 30 grades launched the strike at 6.30 day before yesterday on 10 demands including an allowance of 3000 rupees.

A group of health service assistants, attendants, laboratory technicians and ward clerks including members of 5 trade unions in the field joined the strike.

A protest was held in front of the Health Ministry last afternoon with the participation of 1000 hospital workers.

The protest was staged with the expectation of holding talks with the Health Minister to resolve their issues.

Trade union representatives held a discussion yesterday with the acting health secretary Pearl Weerasingha.

Chairman of the All island suwa sewa union Samantha Koralearachchi stated that it was agreed to hold a discussion with the health Minister within a week.

Discussions unsuccessful;Health strike to continue until 6.30 am tomorrow

The discussion held between the health workers under 30 grades of 5 trade unions including the All Island Health Services Union as well as the authorities of the Health Ministry this evening ended without resolving the matter.

Chairman of the All Island Health Services Union Samantha Korale-arachchi told our news team that they will continue today’s trade union action until 6.30 am tomorrow.

A protest was held in front of the Health Ministry this afternoon with the participation of 1000 hospital workers.

The protest was staged with the expectation of holding talks with the Health Minister to resolve their issues.

Later the authorities of the Health Ministry have agreed to hold a meeting with the relevant trade unions.

Traffic in several roads around the Health Ministry was interrupted due to the protest staged this afternoon.

The protest which was staged by the health workers yesterday based on 10 demands including 3000 rupees allowance, continued throughout the day today.

Therefore, the daily activities of the hospitals were carried out with the assistance of the army.

Addressing a media briefing convened in Colombo today, Director General of Health Services Palitha Maheepala stated that they have obtained the assistance of the members of the army and the Civil Security forces today as well.

He added that services in all the hospitals were carried out without any interruptions.
