Agitations in Kahawaththa after the Koatakethna case verdict: Main road closed for one hour: Tear gas and water cannons used by police to disperse the agitators
A tense situation cropped up in the Kahawatta town last afternoon after court decided to acquit and set free the three defendants in the killing of a mother and a daughter at Kotaketana in Kahawatta on 19th July, 2012.
A group of Kotaketana residents staged about an hour-long agitation at the Kahawatta town junction.
While they were engaged in a protest blocking the Ratnapura – Ambilipitiya Road, the police used water cannons and tear gas for dispersing the protesters.
However the police said at present a peaceful situation prevails in the Kahawaththa town.
Police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that a police squad had been deployed to beef up security in the area.
